TV interview with CNBC Africa:

Malo Stables Competitive Horse Breeding

Danish Pioneer Breeds Top Warm Bloods Malo stables is the first proper warm blood breeding facility in Kenya, breeding studbook Danish, Dutch (KWPN) and German warm blood of highest quality for dressage and jumping. Anja du Toit, a passionate horsewoman and Dane herself, swapped her job as spokesperson in the United Nations World Food program for a horse-business in Kenya: MALO Stables. Like the world famous Dane, Karen von Blixen, who lived in Kenya in the 1920′s, she has ‘a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong hills’ – breeding sports horses with the best genetics from today’s top European breeding stock. Malo stables’ Anja du Toit is the first person in Kenya to import stallion semen, officially. The Livestock department developed the existing protocol for stallion semen import for the first time due to Anja’s request. Sadly, there is no experience with artificial insemination in horses in the veterinary community in Kenya, so Malo Stables has worked with a veterinarian from South Africa who has inseminated, flushed and transferred embryos – another first in Kenya. Malo stables is therefore also the first stable to produce a live ‘embryo transfer foal’ in Kenya, First Lady of Kenya (Fürstenball/Milan) born during the Kenyan elections 2013. Malo stables is a true pioneer in warm blood breeding. Malo Stables aims to sell most of the foals and youngsters in Kenya, hoping to improve the sport via better horses. However, proper warm blood horses – let alone imported mares and semen – are significantly more expensive than the horses bought of the racetrack (the horses people ride in Kenya at present). Hence, Malo stables has set up business relations with top European brokers as well as professional riders in South Africa, in order to export horses that have proved to be too valuable and talented for the local market.

Sales Horses: ContendraContendra Filly
Born June 2014 (Contendros  (Contendro 1)/ Anvari xx)

Contendra is already showing her breeding jumping around in the paddocks with her little lusitano friend. Its early days, but she is beautiful and highly energetic. Her mother was my first horse here in Kenya, who showed a lot more talent jumping than dressage, which she was bought for. Therefore we decided to import some proper ‘warm blood jumping blood’ to create this talented mare.
